World Social Forum
Belem, Brazil

The Network attended the six-day 2009 World Social Forum to continue linking the local and global impacts of policies on women. Diana Salas, Associate Director for the Network presented at three difference venues:

  • Global Call to Action Against Poverty's (GCAP) Feminist Task Force forum on developing women's tribunals globally.
  • Women's Livelihoods for a Dignified Life, the launch of a Global Women's Network.
  • Race and Leadership in partnership with the Research Center for Leadership in Action at NYU, a workshop discussion on research as a political tool.

The World Social Forum serves as an open platform to provide alternative views to the World Economic Forum.To learn more on its history click here.

June 2008

Hitting the Ground Running: Research, Activism, and Leadership for a New Era
The National Council for Research on Women
Kimmel Center, NYU, New York

This two-day conference hosted by the National Council for Research on Women brought together researchers and advocates to discuss the pressing concerns facing women. The Network participated in the opening plenary "Stir it Up: Women's Activism Reframing Political Debates" as well as a workshop focusing on innovative academic center models.

National Conference on Asian American Women: Celebrating Success, Meeting Challenges
Asian American Research Institute
City University of New York, Graduate Center, New York

Hosted by the Asian American Research Institute at City University of New York, this one day conference examined past, present and future challenges and objectives for Asian American Women. The Network presented on Asian American Women in Public Administration at the session on Public Administration and Government.

Hear Us Now!
Raising Women's Voices National Conference
Boston, MA

A collaborative initiative of The Avery Institute, Merger Watch project of Community Catalyst, and National Women's Health Network this conference aimed to mobilize and connect women on the issue of quality affordable health care. The Network presented at a workshop titled "Why isn't healthcare considered a human right?" and reiterated the need for local policymakers to use a human rights framework.

Beyond Ourselves, Sociology in the Global Mode
78th Annual Eastern Sociological Conference
New York , NY

The 78th Annual Eastern Sociological Conference brought over 100 sociologists from around the nation. The Network presented "Dissolving under the Burden the Unmet Needs of Women Living with HIV/AIDS in NYC" in a workshop focusing on HIV/AIDS research.

Freedom on our Terms Conference
National Women and Girls Conference
Hunter College, New York

Organized by the Bella Azbug Leadership Institute, this intergenerational conference celebrated the 30th anniversary of the historic National Women's Conference in Houston. The Network presented at the closing plenary on the need to address both race and sex, and other markers of difference in feminist platforms and presented at a workshop focusing on girls and young women.

Let's Talk About Sex
Sister Song Women of Color Reproductive Health
Chicago ,IL

Organized by the Sister Song Women of Color Reproductive Health, the four-day conference focused on exploring the issues around sex through a reproductive justice lens. The Network and the Latina Advocacy Network presented at the "US Policy and Violence Against Women of Color" workshop on structural violence and the role of media in perpetuating stereotypes of women of color .
