Lewis Rudin

Students and teacher

Lewis Rudin, a native New Yorker and graduate of New York University, carried on a family tradition begun more than 60 years ago by his builder-philanthropist parents, Samuel and May Rudin, who rose from modest beginnings in New York City to become two of New York’s major builders and real estate owners. The stamp of the Rudin family can be seen throughout the city in the 22 residential and 17 commercial buildings constructed, owned, and managed by Rudin Management Company, founded in 1925 by Samuel Rudin and his brothers. Lewis Rudin’s brother, Jack Rudin, currently serves as Chairman.

As New York City’s most energetic and near-legendary advocate, Lewis Rudin initiated a wide variety of activities specifically aimed at maintaining the City’s place as the top corporate and financial headquarters of the world and at making the City a better place in which to live and work. In his capacity as the Chairman of the Association for a Better New York (ABNY), an organization he founded in 1971 to address the problems and issues affecting the economic health of the City, Lewis Rudin’s affection for and commitment to New York were particularly apparent.

Lewis Rudin’s unrelenting devotion to his city won him awards and plaudits from far and wide. He was named Honorary Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire; held the Bronze Medallion, New York City’s highest civic award; and was named a “Living Landmark” by the New York Landmarks Conservancy.
