Asthma In New York City

CHPSR is investigating the dramatic rise in hospital utilization for asthma since 1988, especially among pediatric patients. Analyses will explore the impact of increases in disease prevalence/incidence, changes in physician practice style, trends in hospital coding practices, and the potential impact of environmental factors.

Emergency Department Profiling Project

United Hospital Fund

This study of emergency department (ED) patients is designed to identify patients who require only primary care services and patients who now require emergency care but could have avoided the need for ED care had they received timely and effective outpatient care. The project will produce a diagnostic classification system that can be used as an outcome measure to evaluate health care interventions (such as the impact of Medicaid managed care) and can help hospitals and community planners in understanding the magnitude of access problems in a community and assist in identifying neighborhoods where barriers to primary care are most significant.
