The Institute for Civil Infrastructure Systems (ICIS)
is a research and education center founded in
January 1998, located at New York University's Robert F. Wagner
Graduate School of Public Service, and directed by Professor Rae
Zimmerman. ICIS promotes interdisciplinary approaches to planning,
building, and managing the complex world of civil infrastructure
systems to meet their social and environmental objectives. Current
areas of research include infrastructure security and protection,
risk communication and management, and the sustainability of urban
areas. Its research is currently funded by the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency for the South Bronx Environmental Health and Policy
project and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security through three
university centers at the New York University (the Center for
Catastrophe Preparedness and Response, the University of Southern
California (Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism
Events), and Dartmouth College (the Institute for Information
Infrastructure Protection).
