Brademas Center Discusses Congress, Defense Issues, and the Future
NYU
Wagner's Brademas Center for the Study of Congress held a well-attended
and timely forum Dec. 14, 2007, on how Congress can come to
grips with looming defense issues such as the War on Terror, changes in
force structure, DOD reform, and base closings. Part of a
series of Brademas Center discussions on Congressional performance
titled "Legislating for the Future," the D.C. forum was convened by Professor Paul Light and included leading scholars on
defense: Paul K. Davis, Principal Researcher, The Rand Corporation;
Kenneth R. Mayer, Professor of Political Science, University of
Wisconsin-Madison; and Michael O'Hanlon, Senior Fellow, The Brookings
Institution. Read more.
Disaster Policy Op-Ed by Prof. Mitchell Moss Published in San Francisco Chronicle
Henry Hart Rice Professor of Urban Policy & Planning Mitchell Moss recently contributed an opinion piece to the San Francisco Chronicle entitled "Out of scale - we need a disaster policy sized to our catastrophes." Moss argues that despite improvements in FEMA since Hurricane Katrina, the "underlying federal disaster response system is still in need of reform." His piece, published on December 26th, can be read here. A response to the piece from Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu was published as the last of the Letters to the Editor on January 1st.
Scholarship Fund Established in Memory of Patty Noonan
A scholarship fund for young women pursuing a degree in public service
has been established in honor of Patty Noonan, ’99, who sadly passed away in December after a nine-month battle with
non-smoking related lung cancer. After completing her MPA at NYU
Wagner, Patty joined the Partnership for New York City where she served
for a decade – most recently as Senior Vice President for Research
& Policy. She leaves behind her husband and 14-month-old daughter,
as well as many family and friends who loved her dearly. To perpetuate
the memory of Patty, and to help her daughter understand the important
contributions she made to the city, a scholarship fund for young women
pursuing a degree in public policy is being established in her name at
NYU Wagner. Contributions to the scholarship may be sent to NYU Wagner
Noonan Fund (checks may also be made out to the same), Attn: Lisa
Taylor, Puck Building, 295 Lafayette St., 2nd Floor, New York 10012.

Looking to hire the perfect candidate for a job or an internship? Recruit for your organization. The annual NYU Wagner Career Fair brings together job seekers and representatives of nonprofit organizations, government agencies, hospitals and health organizations, urban planning agencies, international and global organizations, and private sector companies that have a public sector component for informal meetings with students and alumni. Reserving a table at this Career Fair can increase your organization’s visibility by allowing students and alumni to gather information about your agency, as well as garner interest for specific openings. This year, Wagner has invited the following peer schools to join us at our annual Career Fair: The Heinz School at Carnegie Mellon University, the Georgetown Public Policy Institute at Georgetown University, and the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. The Public Service Graduate Student and Alumni Career Fair will take place Thursday, March 13, 2008 from 3:00-6:00PM at The Puck Building, Grand Ballroom, 293 Lafayette Street, New York, NY.
